I can attest from my former life as a blogger that philosophers at Pitt and UNebraska (as well as Princeton) also have their names written into their ip=addresses.
David Velleman lives! Well that's good - I'm hoping that he'll pick up the pace from the current rate of one post every eight months. I miss his posts.
Privacy on the internet is an illusion. ISPs that feel like playing hardball would need approximately one week to learn which congress members are secretly looking at gay porn and blackmail them. Even if your ISP doesn't go as far as putting your name onto your address like Princeton, et al, it's not that hard to figure out who someone really is from their IP address. Soon enough there will be some scandals that will make it clear to people that you aren't actually anonymous on the internet, though it hasn't happened quite yet.
Bernd Goerhring isn't in philosophy at Notre Dame. He's affiliated with the Program of Liberal Studies, which is a completely different department.
